Add a Little Ruffle to Your Party

by Beth on February 10, 2011

I just love to give that personal touch to my party favors. Here’s one that doubles as a name tag holder for your table. To add a little ruffle to your next birthday party follow the easy instructions below.

1. Materials
Yarn: I like to use organic products whenever I can. Lion Brand’s Nature Choice Organic Cotton Yarn is just perfect. It’s easy to find, Michael’s carries it, it’s thick (it knits really fast), and extremely soft. The color here is one of my favorites, it’s called Dusty Sage, but it’s really more lime than that.

Needles: No. 11. I prefer wood, not as slippery as the metal.

Ribbon and Tag: Use whatever you have on hand. I got this polka dot cross grain ribbon for a dollar a roll from Michael’s sale bin. The pink paper is card stock from Staple’s.

2. Knitting
Cast on 56 stitches. Seed Stitch (knit one, purl one, the trick is to make sure you are always putting the opposite stitch in the row below, a knit stitch goes into a purl stitch and a purl stitch goes into a knit stitch) for 9 rows. On the 10th row, decrease your stitches to a total of 14 by knitting 4 stitches together at a time. Knit 2 rows. Knit 2 rows double seed stitch (knit two, purl 2 for 2 rows at a time). Leave knitting on needles.

3. Presentation
Tie up your ball of yarn, your ruffle on its needle, and the spare needle with your ribbon in a cute bow. Add tag with guest’s name. Place on dinner plate at their place. A great favor, a great conversation starter, and knitting your scarves is a great way to spend time with your friends.

A Hot Drink for a Cold Night

January 2, 2011

My very smart niece (who knows her aunt well) was perusing the aisles of Williams & Sonoma and found all of the ingredients (minus the rum) for mulled cider for her well deserving aunt. Can’t possible be as easy as it looks, right? Wrong! Instructions are on the bottle, and the can for that matter, [...]

Our Mulled Wine Recipe

October 19, 2010

This just screams festive to me. Not sure why exactly. Maybe it’s the deep garnet color and the mingling scents of spices and fruit…of course it could also be the alcohol and how it seeps into every cold cell of your body to make your cheeks flush and your toes tingle. Ah well, whatever the [...]

Easy Halloween Party Decorating Ideas

October 6, 2010

I’ve been collecting Halloween decorations for years, but if you’re new to this, you don’t have to spend a lot on them. And you can make a lot for just pennies. Take spiders for example. Every respectable spider needs a web, right? Take 4 dowels or –better yet, twigs from your yard and wind string, [...]

Caramel Apples…Dessert, A Serving of Fruit and Decoration Too

October 1, 2010

While we’re in fall party mode, I thought of a great casual dessert to serve, and you can even count it as a serving of fruit, which means the calories don’t count. You know those gigantic caramel apples that are sold in department stores? The ones dripping with layers of dark, milk and white chocolate, [...]

Got Hot Apple Cider on Your Fall Party Menu?

September 22, 2010

It’s a gorgeous fall day here, sunny and in the upper 50′s, and that has me thinking, naturally, about hot alcoholic beverages. Oh, don’t ask…it was a long night. So, do you have hot apple cider on your fall party menu? If you don’t, you should. Along with mulled wine and pumpkin martinis, of course. [...]
